Just Who Do You Blame ?

The consensus of opinion is that the current Transfer Window has seen fees escalate to unimaginable levels. However it is too easy to blame PSG for their outlay on Neymar, or Borussia Dortmund on the amount paid in signing Dembele as the reason. No, the real reason is the fees that are being asked and being paid for reserve or average players.

Liverpool trounced a very poor Arsenal side recently 4-0 and one member of that side was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who could not be considered a regular first team choice and who was substituted after 62 minutes. Fast forward 5 days and Liverpool pay £40 million pounds for the same player who will not automatically walk into their midfield.

Manchester City bought Mangala for £32m on a 5 year deal and after only 48 games loaned him out to Valencia. They also signed John Stones from Everton last year for £48m and he found himself on the bench more than he expected. So it is not surprising that the likes of Virgil van Dijk, signed by Southampton just 2 years ago for £13m, is now being valued at up to £70m.

It would appear that most clubs will not listen to any offers for first team squad players unless their transfer valuation is greater than £20m and that is the real problem.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is set to bring in no less than £67m for five reserve players who’ve scraped together only 117 Premier League games between them. Levy’s predilection for doing his business in the last 24 hours of the transfer window is legendary. Although his purchase of Sissoko from Newcastle last year for £30m was not the best piece of business.
