Mersey Beat - Mossway Hall, Croxteth

Mossway Hall

Mossway Jiving Club was set up by a young Sam Leach in 1958 at Mossway Hall purely because of his love for 'rock 'n roll music. setting himself up as manager and secretary he got members to sign up to a 6 page rule book copied from the one at The Cavern. Together with his mate Dick Matthews they promised patrons three and a half hours of solid rock 'n roll; the very best bands on Merseyside plus the top records; good companionship where guy meets doll; and one of the best halls in Liverpool.

Dick Matthews, who lived all his life in Norris Green, is credited with taking around 200 pictures of the Beatles in their black leather jacket days before they shot to fame a lot of which appeared in Bill Harry's 'Mersey Beat' publication.

Upon their return from Hamburg, 'Rory Storm and The Hurricanes' went to watch 'The Beatles' at Litherland Town Hall and they performed their first return gig at Mossway Hall on Friday the 6th of January 1961, the day before Rory's 23rd birthday and they played there again the following Friday. Rory also recalls that when they played there on Friday the 10th of February 1961 "that they were 45 minutes early, played good and that there was a big fight there".

The Beatles' only performance at Mossway Hall, on Moss Way, Croxteth, Liverpool was on St. Patrick's Day, Friday the 17th of March 1961. They didn't get paid for their performance but they had as much Guinness as they wanted. It was also their only show for promoters Ivamar - Mr McIver and Mr Martin - who ran nights at three northern Liverpool venues: St Luke's Hall in Crosby (also known as The Jive Hive), the Ivamar Club (Masonic Hall) in Skelmersdale, and Mossway Hall.
Afterwards 'The Beatles' travelled to Liverpool city centre for a show at The Liverpool Jazz Society on Temple Street, a venue that was also known as The Iron Door.
The infamous Lobster pub is also in Moss Way on the opposite side to the hall.

P.S. Paul McCartney’s mum and dad were married in the local church, St Swithin’s R.C Church, Gillmoss. Paul's dad Jim lived Scargreen Avenue, Norris Green, while his 'Mother Mary' ( Lady Madonna ) lived in Fieldton Road in Croxteth
