Mersey Beat - Brockman Hall, St Johns Church, Tuebrook

Located on Snaefell Avenue, Brockman Hall is behind St Johns Church on West Derby Road, Tuebrook.
The Beatles' first performance at St John's Hall for the princely sum of £20 was on the 16th of February 1961.

Having started them off at her Casbah Club, Mona Best also saw that other groups were being promoted at local halls and so began doing the same for 'The Beatles' under the name of 'Casbah Promotions' at St Johns Hall and Knotty Ash Village Hall. That night they appeared with 'Gene Day & The Jango Beats'. 'The Beatles' knew 'Gene Day & the Jango Beats', later to be known as 'Earl Preston and the Tempest Tornadoes', because when they arrived back from Hamburg they didn't have their equipment with them and had to borrow Gene Day's stuff for their gig at the Casbah.

'The Big Three' also appeared with them here on occasions, with Johnny Gustafson appearing on stage with them on their 8th appearance.
Their 11th and final appearance here was on the 8th of September 1961. Mona Best's son Pete, who set up 'Casbah Promotions' with her, sometimes liked to advertise the group as 'The Fabulous Beatles Rock Combo'.

It is believed in some quarters that Brian Epstein came to a Beatles concert here at St John’s Youth Centre on Snaefell Avenue, Tuebrook in July 1961 and spotted the group months before his first reported gig at the Cavern in November that year. Witnesses have verified that he was indeed present, recognising him from his record store, and that John Lennon's wife, Cynthia, was also there dressed in an all leather outfit. Bill Harry has said that after Brian had been selling his Mersey Beat magazine at his NEMS store, he was fascinated by this 'Mersey Beat' because he never knew such a music scene existed on his own doorstep. It is possible that he was there to see what it was all about but did not remember seeing the group or being impressed, because his first memory and encounter is obviously and irrefutably at the Cavern.
