Mersey Beat - The Cabaret Club

Situated in 'The Ropewalks' area of Liverpool at 28 Duke Street, The Cabaret Club at the time was the only real cabaret club in Liverpool catering for 'older' audiences with the likes of Shirley Bassey appearing.

'The Beatles' played here at this prestigious club for the only time on the 25th of July, 1962, a booking made by Joe Flannery on behalf of Brian Epstein. It was an attempt by Brian to expose the group to a broader audience but it was not, however, a success, as 'The Beatles' were ill-suited to the cabaret circuit. The show was not advertised and they had come there directly from playing two shows at The Cavern, one at lunch time and then one in the evening, but they didn't enjoy this experience as they were not well received and made it clear they would not be returning. They were paid £15 for their performance, which co-manager of the club Bob Woodward recalled as being so loud that they made the windows rattle.

The club later became The Holywood Club but the building which held the club has since been demolished.
