Mersey Beat - Lewis's Department Store

' Meet under a statue exceedingly bare '

A one and only 'live' gig by 'The Beatles', following an evening session at The Cavern, was held at Lewis's flagship company store on the top floor of their Ranelagh Street building. The late-night appearance by 'The Beatles' here on the 28th of November 1962 was at a staff party for the employees of Lewis's department store in Liverpool promoted as a 'Young Idea Dance' with the floor being renamed 'The 527 Club' for the night.

The event was headlined by the 'Dee Valley Jazz Band and Pam', with 'The Beatles' at the bottom of the bill. Both were used to appearing together at The Cavern at the time. The entrance tickets for the night cost three shillings and sixpence ( 17.5p ). Rob Turner played in the Jazz band on his Fender bass and he remembered Paul McCartney 'having a go' on his double bass after the show.

Interestingly Peter Brown, who became Brian Epstein's personal assistant, had been in charge of Lewis's Record department, a place that John and Paul frequented looking through the records. Paul had also worked there on one of their delivery vans.
The company ran from 1856 to 1991 when it went into administration.
