Mersey Beat - The Odeon

The Odeon, London Road, Liverpool

Not a regular venue for groups to play but in the early 1960s more and more Odeon cinemas throughout the country were being used for concerts. The Odeon in Liverpool was built on the site of a boxing stadium which had closed in 1931 and opened as the Paramount in 1934 with a seating capacity of 2670 making it the largest cinema in the Merseyside area and cost £240,000 to build. In 1942 Paramount sold the cinema to the Odeon Deutsch group and it was renamed the Odeon and was the first to install CinemaScope with four-track magnetic stereophonic sounds in 1954.

On the 7th of December 1963 'The Beatles' performed at The Odeon, Liverpool at a homecoming concert after 4 months away.
Earlier in the year, on the 26th of August 1963, 'The Beatles' began a six-night residency at the Odeon Cinema in Southport, Lancashire. It was a venue they had performed at once before on the 1st of March that year as a support act on the Helen Shapiro tour.

Their final performance there was on the 31st of August 1963 and on each of the 6 consecutive nights they did the same set consisting of Roll Over Beethoven, Thank You Girl, Chains, A Taste Of Honey, She Loves You, Baby It's You, From Me To You, Boys, I Saw Her Standing There and Twist And Shout.
