Harry Kane - The Solution or The Problem?

Does Gareth need to change his main striker?

The first thing to say is that Harry Kane is an excellent footballer and goalscorer, in fact, Gareth Southgate has said that Kane is “up at the top” with the best forwards in the world, and believes there is no better out-and-out striker on the planet.
However that in essence could be his biggest problem as he attempts to create an England team who will be up there with the best in the world. Southgate's system revolves around the goal scoring exploits of his main striker. In doing so he has adopted a 'Back Three' with attacking wing backs and deploying a holding midfielder which leaves only three more positions to support Kane. In these he has decided to use speedy young energetic players at the expense of a creative midfielder who is able to dictate play.
Some would argue that he hasn't one at his disposal but at Under 21 level and below there would appear to be candidates who have succeeded on the world stage at their own levels. We have got talent coming through but they need opportunities and that's what 'Friendly matches' should be used for. It is the only way we will spawn an English player close to Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Kevin De Bruyne or Thiago Alcantara.
In his after match interview Gareth Southgate said, "We are under no illusions. We are still at the early stages of what we want to do. This was a tough test in terms of pressing and a team who are so good in possession. We have to keep reviewing and looking at what we do but we want to stick to the plan and get better at what we do."
This could mean he needs to give the likes of Rashford a chance as the main forward supported by some younger creative midfielders such as Phil Foden, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tom Davies, Harry Winks, Will Hughes, Lewis Cook, Kieran Dowell, James Ward-Prowse, Jack Grealish or even a rejuvenated Ross Barkley. As you can see there are players there, and that list is not complete, but they need to be given a chance and the system needs to change to mirror teams such as Spain, Belgium and Brazil.
