Merseyside Mirth Makers - Mick Miller

Mick Miller

Born as Michael Lawton on the 25th of February 1950 in the Dingle, Liverpool he attended Cardinal Newman Secondary school where his first ambition was to be a footballer. He played as a goalkeeper for the Liverpool Catholic Schoolboys team, and as a boy he signed for Port Vale when Sir Stanley Matthews was their general manager and in 1966 had a trial for the England youth team but unfortunately lost out to a young lad called Peter Shilton.

When he decided to leave football he began performing at Pontins where he became interested in stand-up comedy and in 1971 started work at their Camber Sands camp near Hastings. Having cut his teeth as chief comedian at various Pontins venues he decided to move back north and take up the offer of work with Stuart Littlewood Associates in Manchester and embarked upon a career in the clubs.
In 1976, Mick applied to go on the popular TV talent show, New Faces. He was accepted and won his heat. As a direct result, he was signed up for a national tour supporting Chuck Berry. Other tours followed, and in 1977 he was offered his first summer season in Morecambe. In 1978 he performed the summer season at Blackpool’s South Pier and again the following year which was when TV producer, Johnny Hamp saw him, and offered Mick a regular spot on 'The Comedians' TV show. He has also co-presented ' The Funny Side', regularly appeared on 'Today With Des and Mel' and has been a guest on shows such as ' Blankety Blank', ' They Think It's All Over', The Little and Large Show and ' Des O'Connor Tonight'.

Appearing on 'The Comedians'

In 2004, Johnny Hamp reunited four of the original comedians for a nationwide theatre tour. Mick, along with Roy Walker, Frank Carson and Ken Goodwin, played to packed houses up and down the country.
Having parted with his manager Mick decided to try something new and appeared on a Comedy Club night in Manchester where he went down a storm. He found the younger audiences loved him, and he gained a new respect from the younger generation of comedians who appeared with him. BBC radio shows followed and he also appeared for two series in the cult BBC TV show, 'IDEAL' alongside Johnny Vegas.

In 2011, 'The Bald Guy With The Long Hair' as he is sometimes billed, was asked to perform in front of The Princess Royal at The Royal Variety Show. His critically acclaimed performance was possibly the highlight of the night.

Mick combines his acting with his cabaret performances, his after dinner comedy and cruise ship work. He is still very much in demand with the major cruise lines, performing at Corporate Functions, Theatres, Cabaret Clubs and the new style Comedy Club.
