Merseyside Mirth Makers - Pauline Daniels

Pauline Daniels

Pauline Daniels was born on the 30th of June, 1955 in Birkenhead as Pauline Ann Malam, the only child of Charles and Doreen. After attending Mersey Park junior school she proceeded to Prenton Park Secondary school in the late 1960's and, despite the strict atmosphere, had a happy time there. She does however recall with some satisfaction that the headmistress wrongly predicted, "you'll never get anywhere in life young lady by being a clown".
After leaving school at sixteen, Pauline wanted to be an actress but with no means of supporting herself through theatre school, she bluffed her way into a succession of office jobs. Her first experience as an entertainer was when she was in her early 20's as a singer in the Wallasey-based group 'Trio'. One night a sore throat restricted her singing and so she told a few jokes to such good effect that jokes became an important part of the act.

Pauline is widely regarded as the UK’s No.1 stand up comedienne, a very funny lady who can silence men with one look and funny quip. She has travelled all over the World making people laugh and performing at some of the most prestigious venues, including The London Palladium. Her many television credits include Granada TV’s 'The Comedians', Pauline being the first and only female comic to feature in this ITV show, and also on the BBC’s ' Wogan'.

Pauline is also highly acclaimed for her straight acting. The first of her many stage roles was at the Liverpool Playhouse as Mama Morton in Chicago in 1986, followed by Rose in 'Gypsy' at the same venue. Following a variety of musical, comedy and straight roles, she began her legendary run as Willy Russell's favourite 'Shirley Valentine' in 1992 and continued to play the definitive 'Shirley' all over the country.

The Foreword is by Ken Dodd

Pauline is now widely accepted as one of Merseyside’s greatest theatrical talents who loves Liverpool and Liverpool loves Pauline Daniels. As an appreciation for this true professional, this multi-talented comedienne, actress, and singer and for her outstanding and on-going contribution to the performing arts she was presented with a Honorary Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University.
