Andrew Schofield |
Andrew Schofield was born on the 12th of October 1958 in Kirkby, Liverpool and attended St Kevin's RC Comprehensive School. At 15 he was cast in Willy Russell's first Play for Today ' Death of a Young, Young Man. Alan Bleasdale watched it and thought ‘Dear God, that’s Scully.’He relates, "We were coming back from Halewood to Kirkby and we hit the worst storm on God's Earth. There was thunder, lightning and rain battering the car. "I’m going along the M57 and I actually said to Andrew ‘You know I can’t see a thing’ and Andrew said ‘Buddy Holly’s pilots last words’, and that was a 15 year old kid. And I thought ‘Hello’."
Skully - Episode 1 |
This led Andrew to his biggest TV role as Francis (Franny) Scully in the1984 Granada series 'Scully'. In 1991 his portrayal of Peter, the wonderfully nasty
militant agitator, was an unforgettable feature of
Bleasdale's television series 'GBH'.
Schofield's best known film role was that of Johnny Rotten in Alex Cox's 1986 film 'Sid and Nancy'. He travelled to New York just before he starred in 'Sid and Nancy' to meet John Lydon ("Johnny Rotten" from The Sex Pistols) to talk about the film and how he should play the character. After a great weekend of drinking and partying, the two fell out on the doorsteps of their hotel.
He starred as
the original Narrator in the first production of Willy
Russell's 'Blood Brothers at the Playhouse in Liverpool. Andrew appears regularly at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool and his more recent credits include: 'Council Depot Blues', all four runs of 'Brick Up The Mersey Tunnels', 'Lost Souls' and 'Good Golly Miss Molly'.

He won the 2008 Scouseology Award for Theatre on 25 April 2008 and further appearances at the Royal Court include 'Scouse Pacific', a comedy musical from 2010 to 2011 and as McKenna in Alan Bleasdale's 'Down The Dock Road'.
'Boardwalk Empire' star Stephen Graham says of Andrew " He lived across the road from my Nan's house and I could see him on TV, he was a brilliant actor. That gave me the faith, hope and belief that maybe I could be an actor. He was my hero as a kid."
Andrew still lives
in Kirkby where he was born, along with
his wife and four kids. He's acknowledged to be
outstanding actor (and a more talented musician than
you'd expect any actor to be), and the fact he doesn't
seem inclined to uproot himself to seek big time fame
and fortune outside Liverpool is a huge bonus for the
city.
