Merseyside Mirth Makers - Kate Robbins

Kate Robbins

Although born in Margate on the 21st of August 1958, comedian, actress, impersonator and singer Kate Robbins, from the age of 5, grew up in Wirral and is the brother of comedian Ted and cousin of Sir Paul McCartney. She attended Wirral Grammar School for Girls where she won the Drama Prizes each year, notably with her monologue "All that glitters is not gold". Doing impressions originally happened by accident. She says, "I was a session singer after I left school. I was employed to be a backing singer for Harry Seacombe and the producer heard me messing around doing silly voices and singing impressions of people like Cilla Black, and also Tina Turner."

In 1981 Kate joined the cast of the ITV soap opera Crossroads, playing the part of a pop singer who was recording a single in the fictional motel's basement recording studio. The song, "More Than in Love", was released commercially in the UK (credited as 'Kate Robbins and Beyond' ) and gave Kate a major hit single, reaching number 2 in the UK Singles Chart.

Singer with Prima Donna

She wrote the first theme tune to 'Surprise, Surprise' and provided almost all of the female voices on the television show 'Spitting Image' in the late 1980's and early 1990's and you can hear her on the 1986 No.1 record 'The Chicken Song' with lead vocals by her friend Michael Fenton Stevens. The 1986 Granada Television sketch show 'Robbins' featured Kate, her brother Ted Robbins, and her sisters Amy Robbins, Jane Robbins and Emma Robbins, the last now best known as one of the singers with the 'Sheilas'. Kate and the band 'Prima Donna', which included her sister Jane, represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980 when they finished in third place.

With cousin Paul

Kate participated in the 1989 Children's Royal Variety Performance on BBC TV, singing her own comic songs at the piano, and she featured in the original series of Dead Ringers on BBC Radio 4 in 2000.
Kate appeared in two episodes of the BBC Television comedy series 'Dinnerladies', playing the character 'Babs' a friend of 'Petula Gordino' played by 'Julie Walters'. Kate later appeared with the sitcom's writer Victoria Wood in the BBC TV special - 'Victoria Wood; With All The Trimmings' in 2000.
