Merseyside Mirth Makers - Sean Styles

Sean Styles

Kirkby-born Sean attended St Kevins Comprehensive school and is from the long line of comedy talent to come from Liverpool. Over the years he has gone from strength to strength, starting in 1986 when, from sixty entries, he came first in the 'Liverpool Pub Comedian of the Year'. In 1987 he followed that up with an appearance on TV's New Faces. He has worked the major cabaret venues the length and breadth of the country, with Joe Longthorne, Marty Wilde, The Searchers, Foundations, Drifters, Dana, Jimmy Ruffin and many others.

In 1989 he was winner of Sky TV's Starsearch. In June 1991 Sean appeared at the Grade Theatre, Blackpool, with the Drifters, followed by an appearance with The LA Centrefolds at the Southport Theatre. He was so well accepted, that he was booked for the complete 1992 tour, which was followed by a Summer Season for the Haven Leisure Group. He has completed a four nation-wide theatre tour with the Drifters as well as appearing at the Liverpool Empire with Cliff Richard on the Roy Castle Cancer Appeal Tour.

Sean is also an outstanding impressionist and comedian and exudes that typical Liverpudlian dry wit that has earned him an enviable reputation in the area. He hosts the BBC Merseyside Breakfast Show every week day and spends his evenings working as a comedian and after dinner speaker. A huge football fan, it was inevitable that he would suit sporting dinners where his off the cuff style and audience banter work at their best. The former New Faces contestant and Starsearch winner  has actually been at Radio Merseyside more than 20 years having originally shared a Sunday show with fellow comedian, friend and Liverpool supporter Willie Miller for five years.

Sean & Willy

Ricky Tomlinson said "I must tell you a lovely story about Sean Styles. When I ran a casting agency, I got a call from the Mrs Merton Show (this is before I knew Caroline Aherne), which wanted a warm-up man. I told Sean I had a great opening for him but he told me he wouldn’t be able to make it, because he had promised to do a free show for pensioners in Kirkby – and he wanted to keep that promise. That’s a measure of the man and I’m so glad to see how well he’s done for himself – I think his radio show is great".
