Lee Mack |
Lee Gordon McKillop, known by his stage name Lee Mack, was born in Southport on the 4th of August 1968. He lived there, above a pub, until he was 12 when his parents separated and he moved to Blackburn. Lee went to Birkdale Primary Junior School (Bury Road), Stanley High School in Southport followed by Everton High School in Blackburn.
His beginings in comedy came after a series of casual jobs, including stable boy, when he worked at Ginger McCain's stables in Southport and rode Red Rum, and
also working in a bingo hall. His first taste of stand-up came as a Pontin's Bluecoat but was sacked from the Yarmouth camp after calling a
member of the audience an offensive name, although he did manage another six
months at Pontins in Morecambe.
His first experience of the wider circuit came in 1994,
when he did his first 'open mike' slot whilst a student at Brunel
University, West London. He was hooked, and less than two years later, he was working full-time as a comedian. The following year he gained attention when he won 'So You Think You're Funny' at the 1995 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
'Not Going Out' - Sally Bretton and Tim Vine with Lee |
In 1996, he returned to the festival as part of an ensemble show,
'Gagging For It', and the following year he performed the solo show 'Return
Of The Mack'. He had some level of fame by then, having hosted the
Channel 4 stand-up show 'Gas', but found the experience of performing
alone disheartening.
So in 1999, he teamed up with Catherine Tate and Dan Antopolski for the Fringe sketch show 'Lee Mack's Bits' with the 2000 follow-up show nominated for the Perrier award. On the
strength of that,Lee became one of the key players in ITV's 'The Sketch
Show', which ran from 2001 to 2003. He was the only member of the UK
cast to feature in the short-lived American remake, introduced by Kelsey
Grammer, in 2004.
The following year he landed the job of host on BBC One sports quiz 'They Think It's All Over', taking over from Nick Hancock, but the programme was cancelled after one series with Lee in the chair. He
has also hosted 'Have I Got News For You' on three occasions.
Rob, Lee and David |
The
BBC broadcast his first sitcom, 'Not Going Out', in 2006. The project was
written with Tim Vine, in which Lee plays the central character, also named Lee.
The sitcom has won great accolades, including a Rose d’Or and RTS Award.
Lee Mack is also a team captain on the BBC One panel show 'Would I Lie To You?' The panel show remains razor-sharp, now in its 11th series, with host Rob
Brydon and team captains Lee and David Mitchell a perfect
combination.
Lee is also a Darts fan and regularly plays with his friend Tim Vine, both appearing on the debut series of 'Let's Play Darts' and facing each other in the final. He currently holds the Guinness World Records title for the most darts number two's in one minute.
