Pool Of Sound - Our Kid

Our Kid

Not really a part of the rich vein of exciting new music coming out of Liverpool, with punk beginning to explode, 'Our Kid' was a young vocal group from Liverpool. They were first discovered on the popular ITV show 'New Faces' (a bit like the X Factor of today) winning the programme on the 1st of May 1976 scoring 118 points out of a possible 120. Their first top selling single was called 'You Just Might See Me Cry' which peaked at No.2 in the UK charts on the 3rd of July 1976. The song, written by Roger Greenaway and Barry Mason, was released on the Polydor label and spent eleven weeks in the charts.

Further singles ' I Can't Live Without You' and 'Romeo and Juliet' didn't match their first chart success.

The original band members consisted of four Liverpudlian teenagers. Lead vocalist was 12 year old Kevin Rowan but he left the band to be replaced by Frankie Jones. 13 year old Brian Farrell, who attended St Gregory's, 15 year old Terry McCreith and 15 year old Terry Baccino were the other members. Terry, who attended Alsop Comprehensive, had replaced 11 year old David Newall who had left the band 2 weeks before the 'New Faces' show as he wanted to concentrate on a new band 'Young World' with Ian Mcnabb and Chris Sharrock who went on to form 'The Icicle Works'.

'Our Kid' were lucky enough to perform a full summer season in Great Yarmouth, but rumour has it that Liverpool Education Committee had something to say about the fact that 'Our Kid' should have really been in school. Either that, or the fact that they turned into one-hit wonders was behind the fall of  'Our Kid'.
