'The Jjohns' (pronounced ‘Johns’) is a four
piece indie/rock band band from Liverpool formed in May 2015 consisting of three brothers, songwriter Dominic Dunning on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Dunning on vocals and guitar, Bernard Dunning on bass guitar, who replaced Ste Brannigan from the original line-up, and Sam Burkett on drums who joined in mid 2016 after their original drummer couldn't commit to the band.
They initially started with Dom and Michael just playing songs and singing anything in the back room of their home on County Road, Walton, Liverpool.Their sound, laced with harmonies and electric acoustic melodies, is highly influenced by the Mersey-beat era and Liverpudlian bands such as 'The La’s', 'Cast', 'Gerry and the Pacemakers' and 'The Beatles'. Other influential musicians include the 'Bee Gees', 'The Everly Brothers' and Buddy Holly: all of whom are obvious when listening to the band's mixed style of old rock and roll and new Mersey-beat.
When the two of them began to play open mic nights,
people watching started giving advice to them, most
suggesting their songs would be better suited to a full band scenario so that's what they did. Mike got his friend in to play drums and then the bass followed. What started out as them jamming led to more gigs, more exposure, and a lot more fans. Their first gig was Eric's Bar on Matthew Street in Liverpool and it was packed.
They released a four-track EP, ‘Stone Across My Cave' in November 2016, shortly followed by a music video for the single of the same name. Gaining support from BBC Introducing Merseyside and Spotify, their
two tracks, 'So Alone', and, 'Lucy', garnered 250,000 streams.
Taking up support slots with the likes of 'Circa Waves', 'Trampolene',
'Paris Youth Foundation' and 'Jordan Allen', the band earned themselves
something of a fierce reputation for their fantastic and unpredictable performances on the live circuit, making the kind of noise that neither
journalists (or labels for that matter) could ignore for long. With the influential music blog 'Get
Into This' hailing that, "The Jjohns always play a brilliant set" and The
Pentatonic remarking that "The Dunnings are one drunken onstage barney
away from being iconic", it's perhaps no surprise then that band picked up early comparisons with the likes of 'The
La's', 'The Beatles' and 'Oasis' across the blogosphere.
Following
their head-turning festival debut at Liverpool Sound City in 2018, they landed a deal with Modern Sky UK, the label that introduced the world to 'The Blinders', 'Catholic
Action', 'The Slow Readers Club' and more. Their debut single for the label, 'Sewn', brought them
much attention and praise and was inspired by a 'Fleetwood Mac' listening binge
whilst on their trip to Eindhoven on a tour of the Netherlands the previous year. Recorded at the legendary Sugarhouse in St Helens, 'Sewn' was produced by Andy Hall and Lee McCarthy.
With the wind of their label
signing behind their sails, the band were now primed and poised for a
bright summer of festival appearances, including a a storming set at the Y-Not
Festival 2018, plus a headline show at Manchester’s
premier indie establishment Jimmy's in September 2018.
Their single, 'Wreckage', released in early September 2019, accumulated nearly 40k streams in the first 10 days of release and demonstrated clearly the band’s now mature sound.
