'Life At The Arcade' |
'Life At The Arcade' is a 4 piece indie pop rock band all from Liverpool who met after playing in different bands
in the past. Their line up consists of Paddy Clegg on vocals & guitar, Ben Truman on bass, Adam
Holmes on lead guitar and Paul Crilly on drums. Paddy & Paul first met at a school 'Battle of the Bands'
competition when they were around 13 and 14 years old. Paddy recalls, " I remember watching Paul playing with his school
band and he really stood out as he was constantly twirling his sticks,
obviously thinking he was the dog's bollocks. However, his playing
technique really was pure class and I knew there and then I had to form a
band and start jamming and writing songs with him." Their name comes from the time lead guitarist Adam
lived in Las Vegas when he was younger and as everyone knows, Vegas is
renowned for its casinos and arcades. They played a packed sold out home town show at The Magnet in Liverpool
in the early stages of their career which was when it
first hit them that they wanted to do this on a regular basis, playing to
as many people as possible.
Since forming in 2015, 'Life At The Arcade's' upbeat indie pop rock has seen them rapidly grab the attention of gig and festival goers, earning fans plus praise on the Dave Monks show 'BBC Introducing' and the BBC 6 Music show, hosted by Chris Hawkins and Tom Robinson. As well as supporting Radio 1 favourites 'Clean Cut Kid' & 'King No One', they even scooped an honourable 'Track of The Week' at Radio X with the irresistible former single 'Wonderland'. On their debut EP, 'From The Basement', the band offered up a collection of tracks that affirmed their formidable knack for a soaring chorus and intelligent lyric, with the release cementing itself as essential listening post amongst their growing army of fans.
They had been building up a head of
steam locally over the years before releasing their single, ‘Little Lies’
a dexterous fusion of chiming indie and soaring anthemic pop which
looked set to broaden their appeal far beyond their local scene. An
infectious ready made festival anthem with a propulsive rhythm which at
times recalls the driving pop of artists like 'Tears for Fears'. It was once again Paul's drumming that sparked the idea for 'Little Lies' as Paddy explains, "I heard Paul playing this really cool groove on his kit in practice
one day and it stuck in my head for days, so I went home and wrote a
complete song around that groove." A new single 'Wonderland' was released in 2018, 'their darkest flavour yet', a little bouncing bottle of summer cutting through the Winter gloom
with sleek production, swaggering vocal delivery and next level guitars. Words for Music blog made it their 'single of the week' fighting off some impressive songs to get it. On their next
single 'Tabloids' , the now fast ascending indie outfit stuck two firm
fingers up to repugnant reporting practices and those publications that
wilfully propagate fake news through our society. Written in early 2018 and finding itself as a staple of the band's live set for some time, 'Tabloids' received its fully-finessed pressing that Spring and hit the shelves in April 2019. Speaking about the inspiration for the track, vocalist and lyricist Paddy Clegg says: "The
media & the news has always fascinated me ever since I was little
however, growing up, you become more aware of how you can be easily brain washed or
led to believe into something which may not necessarily be even true.
Lyrically, 'Tabloids' is about how powerful yet scary this can be." From a city
which has long boycotted one certain newspaper for its unforgivable
misdemeanors of the past, the band are obviously well-and-truly hacked-off
with a culture of torrid tabloid journalism. Originally penned in
guitarist Adam Holmes' basement in Liverpool in 2018, the finished
version of the track was recorded at Liverpool’s prestigious Motor
Museum, with final production added by James Mellor and mastering by
Mike Cave.
