Hard Times

I was born in the year 1900 in a one room Court without running water and electicity, sharing a toilet with several families.
When I was 14 World War 1 broke out and about 40 million people died worldwide.
When I was 18 the war ended but we had Swine Flu, the deadliest pandemic of the century, “Spanish flu,” killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide.
When I was 26 there was the first ever General Strike in Britain which saw battles between police and public in the streets.
When I was 29 the Wall Street Crash occurred which resulted in 2.75 million unemployed with many suffering starvation.
When I was 33 Hitler came to power and Germany became a dictatorship.
When I was 39 World War 2 broke out killing about 3% of the world population.
When I was 40 rationing began and lasted 14 years.
When I was 55 the Vietnam War began.
So when you are asked to wear a mask, keep socially distant from others and wash your hands regularly, give a thought to what I have had to go through. Anon.

I heard Linda McDermott read similar out on Radio Merseyside and decided it was worth sharing.
