Pool Of Sound - Pizza Girl

Liam Brown, aka Pizzagirl (and the artist formerly known as 'Lumen'), emerged on the scene as a fresh-faced 17-year-old in 2016. He started making the melodies when he was about 13 years old on, as he says, 'the most premium and luxury smart tablet, the IPad 2' ( a £12 keyboard from a charity shop ), in the same place he still makes music now which is what he calls the 'Beatzzeria', which is in fact his bedroom. He had always been a prolific songwriter, but what he possibly lacked was the conviction to go with his work rate. His newfound confidence came from the backing of Manchester based label Heist Or Hit, who gave him the comfort he needed to just go and create and he quickly become an internet favourite thanks to his sick lo-fi tunes like 'Seabirds' and 'Carseat'. The change of name from 'Lumen' to 'Pizzagirl' is something that he also credits as a big part in his development. He says, "If I were going to see someone called 'Lumen' I would expect something more pretentious than I was doing at the time." This name change also resulted in an uplift in expectations of what his live show is. Liam adds, "' Pizzagirl' seems like a novelty name but it's just a moniker to be a bit crazy,". He credits a gig he played with Kero Kero Bonito at Liverpool Music Week in 2017 for making him think outside of the (pizza) box about his live setup. "It was a perfect gig for me to do; all their fans were really hardcore and they were all dressed up mad. Sarah (Midori Perry, vocalist) had a flamingo, they were playing proper mad synth patches, it was boss to watch. So I went home, got some synths, and started doing it."

Reading and Leeds were a highlight in his still brief musical career but he's also had his fair share of fun shows in that short time! He recalls, "I fondly remember hitting up Bournemouth with my guys 'Her's' to play a show at this heavy metal club and I loved it!"

While the 2018s, 'An Extended Play' and 'Season 2', plaited together wonky 1-900-hotline-rock, ambient infomercial electronica and woozy 80s film scores into perfect pop pigtails, his proper debut album, 'First Timer', styles the rest of the 'Pizzagirl mannequin' to deliver a record of split-personality genre jumping. Again he states, "I like contradiction, I like the idea of it being a bit wacky – a pick n mix of all my favourite styles." The result is a wide-ranging sound that connects the dots between John Hughes soundtracks, Gus Dapperton’s melodic fluidity and the AM-radio aesthetic of Ariel Pink. At its best, this debut LP sweetly bridged the gap between classic '80s synth-pop and contemporary indie.

'First Timer' Album

Plaudits from The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Vice, Highsnobiety, NME, DIY and The Line of Best Fit all confirm his status as a unique, quick-witted and vital energy. DJ's are also lining up to call themselves fans, with the UK’s most trusted ears in Annie Mac and Huw Stephens at Radio 1 and Lauren Laverne, Shaun Keaveny, and Radcliffe & Maconie at BBC 6 Music all backing his tracks. July 2021 saw the release of a second album, 'Softcore mourn' on which he explores the dichotomies of always-online culture, encapsulated within tales of relationships and breakups. Banjos, beats, tambourines and timbres are all experimented with throughout on melodies that are the album’s stand-out feature.
