Pool Of Sound - The Difference

'The Difference' is a young band that come from Wavertree, Liverpool, and formed in 2017. Knowing each other from school the four-piece consists of Kieran McCarthy on vocals and guitar, Matty Campbell on lead guitar, Lewis Grivosti on bass and Jack Cleary on drums. While Liverpool was at the time mostly filled with twenty-something indie-pop bands, this 16 year old four piece were way beyond their years with a mature indie-rock sound. Their first single, 'Suppose', was released in October 2017 available On Spotify And Apple Music, produced by Andy Fernihough at Crash Studios and was played on BBC Radio Merseyside as part of BBC Introducing and also had air play on Wirral Radio and Mersey Radio. It quickly achieved over 2000 streams on Spotify, with a growing audience. They played their debut gig at The Zanzibar in December 2017 and in January 2018 appeared at The Sound Basement. For a set of lads aged 16/17 that had played less than a handful of gigs to date, their live set is an impressively tight affair with obvious influences from bands like 'The Strokes', 'Arctic Monkeys' and 'The Stone Roses'. Matty Cambell's sonic guitar hooks complement the vocals of the charismatic, confident front man, Kieran McCarthy, whilst the rhythm section of Grivosti and Cleary maintain a propulsive beat that provides the backbone to their sound. In rehearsals, the latter two often break into playing 'Royal Blood' covers during discussions about the finer details of song structures by the other two. More gigs at The Zanzibar and The Arts Club followed as they then went through to the next round of Liverpool Rocks! Battle Of The Bands at the East Village Arts Centre on March the 3rd.

On stage at Heebie Jeebie's, Liverpool Feb 2019

Their debut single was considered a delight, kicking in with a guitar sound instantly commanding your head to nod. From deep vocals with a hint of Liverpool charm flowing throughout to infectious guitar hooks and perfectly timed drums, it sounded like the work of a band who had released countless singles and was recognised by many as a truly impressive debut from a young band with plenty to offer.

There followed the announcement of a new single, 'Tonight', released in May 2018 and then a gig at Studio2 Parr Street in July. Two shows supporting 'Delight' at Liverpool Sound Basement in November and then 'The Cheap Thrills' at Studio2 Parr Street in February 2019 showed their rise in popularity. They announced on Twitter that they had a new single, 'Always Something' out in July and that they were playing the Skeleton Coast Music Festival 2019.
