Pool Of Sound - The Mysterines

The Mysterines original line up

'The Mysterines' is originally a three-piece band from Wirral who became active from around 2017 and are being described as one of the country's best rising bands. In their initial line-up songwriter Lia Metcalfe provided their fierce vocals and guitar, George Favager added gritty bass and Chrissy Moore relentlessly banged the drums after replacing Zak McDonnell the original man behind the sticks.

Music has always been a part of Lia's life, with her father being the singer in the band, 'Sound Of Guns' ( http://www.thefootballvoice.com/2020/04/pool-of-sound-sound-of-guns.html ) Lia says, "My dad was a singer-songwriter in a band. He taught me my first two chords when I was nine and I just wrote songs off the back of that. My dad is really supportive, watching him from an early age influenced me." Lia has known Chrissy pretty much since birth and she met George when she was about 13 years old. "When I met him I just thought he looked quite cool, I assumed he played an instrument, just from the way he was dressed. I stalked his Facebook until I found him and sent a really long message like, 'I'm not a weirdo, I’m just looking for band members'." They began practising in the front room of Lia's house and it eventually paid off with the band now on an upward trajectory. They have come a long way since, from front room practices and a first gig at age 14, to enjoying an excellent 2018 which included releasing their excellent debut single, 'Hormone', with the assistance Skeleton Key Records and James Skelly, who is credited with shaping the world of 'The Mysterines'. Lia admits that she's obsessed with Bob Dylan lyrically, and as a band they love 'The Strokes', 'Arctic Monkeys', and rap music too. They released their debut EP, 'Take Control' in August 2019 and sold out a December headline show at Jimmy's in Bold Street, Liverpool almost three months in advance.

2019 saw the band become less of a mystery as their stock has grew and grew. When they first started onto the scene, they were very much made popular by word of mouth, due to having no social media, but now things are continuing to get better for the band. They received the seal of approval from Paul Weller no less when they appeared on 'The Modfather's' Black Barn Sessions on You Tube. Also Lia's song writing has recently been recognised by Domino, as she has signed her first ever publishing deal with the record company.

The Mysterines New Line Up

Previously, with very little presence and only a handful of shows and songs to go by, things have now changed with the support of the BBC’s Steve Lamacq and with the ‘Take Control EP’, having major support slots on Miles Kane's tour in 2018 and, more recently, a tour with 'The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets'. They parted company with drummer Chrissy Moore in January 2020 with 'mutual agreement' enabling him to pursue new projects. Lia says, " I’m really happy for him. We're still really good mates and just wanted to support each other. He is a creative individual as well and has his own vision, so I didn't want to keep him enclosed in something that wasn't entirely his direction." She adds, "After we finished a tour with 'Psychedelic Porn Crumpets', we went to go and watch one of their shows in Liverpool, which is where we met drummer Paul, who had played drums for 'Life At The Arcade', and guitarist Callum Thompson.

They released their latest single, 'Love's Not Enough' in February 2020 before heading on a almost sold out UK headline tour. Of their new single, 'Who's Ur Girl?', Lia says, "I only wrote that like two months before it was released. I took loads of inspiration from Billie Eilish, which is crazy because it's like two different genres, but it was trying to translate that." February saw their biggest sell out show to date in London, having had the venue moved from the Lexington due to phenomenal demand to a bigger stage at the 500-capacity Tufnell Park Dome venue.
