With Rick Owen on bass, Damian von Talbot on vocals, Stuart Taylor on guitar, Tom Lloyd on guitar and Dave Archer on drums, 'Video Nasties' is comprised from members of some of Liverpool's finest heavy exports; 'The Bendal Interlude', 'SSS' 'Magpyes' and 'Iron Witch'. Dave and Stu have known each other most their lives and spent the best part of 20 years making music together in various bands including 'Bendal Interlude'. So with 'Bendal' and 'Iron Witch' sharing a practice room they spent a lot of time jamming with Tom and Rick, consequently, when 'Bendal' split it, just made sense to get something else going straight away. They had known Damian for years and admired his vocals for 'Magpyes' so it was a no brainier bringing him into the fold after meeting him at a Halloween party. Stuart is the main songwriter and Damian says, " He'll come up with a riff, and it all goes from there. Everyone throws in ideas and then I ruin it all by shrieking over the top."
The quintet mix death metal with punky and thrashy undertones, creating something morbidly macabre and devilishly debauched. Since 2017 they have been lurking in the shadows around Merseyside with their grizzly black 'n' roll and have steadily established a distinctive identity forged through musical influences such as 'Sepultura', 'Carcass' and the horror film scores of John Carpenter, as well as post-punk and Goth. With a chunky instrumental section, complemented by the punishing tones of Damian on vocals, it makes for a uniquely morbid vibe, hung on a background of grainy, retro-dread aesthetic.
Their reputation grew following the release of singles, 'Transvoltum' in 2017 and 'Viva Deth' in 2018 prior to joining the ranks of the label APF, unsurprisingly on Halloween 2019, when they announced they would be releasing their debut album the following year. May 2019 had seen them bring their chilling aura to Desertfest London, as they took over The Black Heart stage, playing a barnstorming set to a room packed out with victims of their blackened tones. They also had slots supporting the likes of 'Cannabis Corpse' and 'The Obsessed'.
Following the release of their single, 'Drone Eagle' on the 12th of January 2020, they set a date of the 14th of March 2020, at Sound Food and Drink, Liverpool, for a launch party to unleash their full-length debut album, 'Dominion'. They recorded the album themselves and then sent it off to Tom Dring to mix it at Vagrant Studios. In the meantime they released a single from the album, 'Hanging Tree' which is reviewed by Kerrang, "Opening with a sleazy grindhouse clip, the song then rushes forward and shakes the listener by the collar for four straight minutes. Bobbing one's head becomes an inevitability among the bounding riffs and howled vocals, while the occasional samples from a classic Vincent Price movie works as creepy accompaniment rather than the load-bearing centerpieces they sometimes become in traditional horror metal."
Distorted Sound reviewing the album said, "This is VIDEO NASTIES' debut album Dominion, it's 40 minutes of raging, horror worshipping metal, and it’s as exciting as it is vicious. After the introductory movie sample, synths and daunting church bells ring out as a huge 80s death metal riff throws you into a vortex of catchy and addictive guitar leads which don’t release you from their grasp until the finish." Rating: 9/10.
