'Chinatown Slalom' comprise of four members who were all course mates at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) in 2017 when aged 19 to 24. Liam Nolan is from Macclesfield. Jake Brettell is from Stratford-upon-Avon, Mikey Woods the guitarist is from Bury, and Ricky Crawford the multi-instrumentalist is from Belfast. Jake and Liam had known each other for just three days when they began work on their debut album. They had proggy 70s Canadian pop band 'Klaatu's', 3:47 EST on the record player, which they found in the bargain bucket at Dig Vinyl in Liverpool, when they decided to start rapping over the top. The end result was the band's first song, 'Dr Marvelo & His Best Friend Corkie'. After meeting like minded Michael and Ricky, who were also in their music production class, the group piled into each others bedrooms, at times with some friends, jamming in the kitchen using whatever they could find; fire extinguishers, sides of sofas for kick drums, tea cups, guitars, scat singing and improvising as they went along. Swapping beats they became a tight unit and eventually made an album, titled, 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' However, instead of launching a campaign, they took it slow, started arranging meetings with record labels and managers as rumours and leaks of the album made their way around the industry. Navigating and readying the album, they had a run of legendary nights and parties in their home, where they'd play and DJ with their growing collective of friends. Their house at 24 Little Bride Street, in the Georgian Quarter of Liverpool, has the words 'Everyone’s Invited' sprayed across its walls. When the album was officially released in June 2019, they'd fulfilled the goal that Liam set himself when moving to Liverpool as a student. While none of the band come from Liverpool, they do want to make their collective home in the city. As they say, "We're all quite attached to Liverpool now so don't think we’ll be going anywhere anytime soon. Cheap rent, kind people and a great scene of super hard working creatives – it's got everything we need and more."

Getintothis describe their first album, "Hip hop, 'Beach Boy' harmonies, free-wheeling rock and roll, warped jazz, collages of conversations, parping brass, running tap water, slap-bass, Hot Chip style electronic melancholy and simply boss pop – are all on display in this infectiously beguiling debut album".
Their first proper gig was at North Shore Troubadour, Liverpool in November 2019 and it was clear from the start that they were like an unpolished gem, not easy to pigeon hole, ranging from rap, jazz, funk and swing with a bit of rock thrown in. They signed a deal with September Recordings but found that they were so burned out from finishing their first album that their productivity dried up for a while. It didn't take them long though to get back into the groove, having fun producing new stuff.
On the 12th of June 2020 Liverpool Sound City announced, "The experimental-pop geniuses 'Chinatown Slalom' will be taking over Guest House this Saturday from 8pm 'til 9pm. These local lads are on the rise to greatness so you do not want to miss out". The lads are putting the finishing touches to an EP and are working on a second album that may take them in a new direction.
