'Motel Sundown' is a Liverpool based band consisting of Naomi Campbell and Karen Turley from the same town in County Tyrone, both playing acoustic guitar, with Robert Johnson from London playing electric guitar. Rob came to Liverpool for uni as did Karen who met Naomi in Liverpool, which was strange as they hadn't met back home. They met in 2016 via a mutual friend and started singing together. Rob had been floating around for a few years or so, playing gigs with different people, before they all started jamming together. They started out doing covers at first, with Naomi and Karen doing a lot of duo gigs together, and then got into writing as a duo, before Rob brought his songs to them both.
They are fast making a name for themselves with their beautiful and unique sound, with rich, earthy harmonies, and their music is a unique blend of Karen and Naomi's Americana and Country and Rob's Folk Rock. With all three being singer-songwriters in their own right, they have spent time together honing their sound, performing locally and at festivals such as Country on the Coast in Portsmouth and at the Melodica Festival, Reykjavik. Their influences range from 'Fleetwood Mac' and 'The Eagles' to Dolly Parton, Neil Young and Johnny Cash. They have started their own regular country night 'The Grand Opry Sessions' in Liverpool and more recently, supported American Singer/Songwriter Alice Walker at the renowned Grateful Fred Sessions in Southport and Bobby West at Jimmy's, Liverpool. They have performed at several festivals in the UK and Ireland and have released four singles to date with every one of them hitting the mark.
'Chicago' was the band's debut single, released on December the 18th, 2019 at The Jacaranda Phase One to critical acclaim, which was accompanied with a tour across Ireland and the UK. Their next single 'Light Of My Life' was released in May 2020, with both garnering support from local radio station BBC Merseyside and further afield with airplay on Express FM and BBC Radio Ulster. 'Before Midnight', the latest single, is another winner, another track which shows off the incredible harmonies of the band, having a real rousing energy combined with a timeless quality that is a trademark of all of their music. The band describe themself as a unique blend of Americana, Country and Folk Rock, and you can hear all of this in this latest single.
The trio should be congratulated for creating a sound much fuller than its three lead performers. In contrast to their previous singles 'Chicago' and 'Light of My Life' that are led more by solo voices, 'Before Midnight' is much more of a vocal fusion which is sheer joy on the ears. Accompanying the single is a music video which features a home-movie style look at some of their favourite Liverpool venues and landmarks! The band is working towards their debut album and in December 2020 posted on their Facebook page, 'Thanks to LIVERPOOLETC.COM for including 'Before Midnight' in their top 20 picks from Mersyside Musicians in 2020! We're in there with some great company.' Then on the 1st of April 2021 tweeted, " We had a great time recording our debut album with the wonderful Andy Ross at Astar Studios."
