Pool Of Sound - The Mono LPs

Liverpool band 'The Mono LPs' comprise of Ste Reid, songwriter on vocals and guitar, Vicky Reid on cello and backing vocals, Chris Barlow on bass and Tom McCabe, replacing Daniel Beech, on drums. Ste and Vicky, then Vicky Mutch, met in music college when Ste, with an acoustic guitar and writing songs, saw Vicky with a cello and attempted to include cello parts in his music before she, a Grade 8 classical musician, corrected his attempts. Despite this they found that when they played together it seemed to work and that really was the birth of the 'The Mono LPs' sound; simply by getting the cello to play things in a non-classical sense. After that, bass player Chris joined them and they went around playing acoustic gigs as a three piece but felt a drummer would make them more a traditional four piece band. After holding an audition for drummers they got Dan to join them and things started to move from there. The band name came from Vicky's dad having been a DJ in Liverpool during the 1970s and flicking through his albums noticed at the top of each one it denoted whether it was either a Stereo or a Mono LP. On all of the older albums it kept saying mono LP and when they came across the 'With The Beatles' album, and that too had 'Mono LP', they both thought that seemed relevant to them.

Having released their first single 'Die A Little Death' on Cavern Records in October 2012, which was recorded at the Grammy award-winning Parr Street Recording Studios, the band went from strength to strength. They worked with influential producers Mike Crossey ('Arctic Monkeys') and Jon Withnall ('Coldplay') and were championed by BBC Introducing's Dave Monks who, when having recorded a sell-out live gig at the Cavern Club for the BBC's Live Lounge sessions, deemed them "a Fantastic band. They just keep getting better and better!". With NME reviewing the 2012 Threshold Festival saying, “Best band of the festival, by far, were 'The Mono LPs'” they were considered one of Liverpool’s bright young prospects.

One journalist described them as Baroque Rock as they showcase juicy guitar riffs, with the cello also riffing its way through a barrage of sound. It sounds like a rock 'n' roll band at full pelt with intricate T-Rex like swooping strings, sexually charged lyrics and an uncompromising energy. The offbeat four-piece have established themselves as a group of major significance on the scene through their impressive work ethic and a dedication to an ever-expanding fan base of 'Monettes'. On the 28th of November 2015 they released 'Christmas Time', having teamed up with Pancreatic Cancer U.K. to raise funds and awareness for the charity with all profits of the single going to the charity. It was deemed a great Christmas song, one with a great message that is modern and relevant with the music and vocals memorable too.

Having been nudging major success since their 2016 debut album, 'States of Decay', ahead of the 2021 follow-up, 'Shuffle/Play', they released an impressive new single by Fretsore Records and the official video, 'Hell, Save My Soul' on the 30th of October 2020.

They recently teamed up with Elvis Costello as part of the Artists4NHS scheme, a project which has been set up to support the health service during the coronavirus pandemic. Having seen Elvis' video of
'(What’s So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding' on Youtube, Vicky, a relation of Elvis Costello, says, "We wrote and recorded some cello parts, backing harmonies and a keyboard part to create a virtual backing band from our home in Liverpool to fit with his performance. We then made the video in our living room." The video has since gained huge traction and has been shared by the man himself.

With the departure of previous drummer Dan Beech, replacement Tom McCabe pushed the band to take a more electronic approach to making beats, and their next release 'Love Me', which they have dubbed the 'Ibiza’ song' followed the raucous 70s rock inspired single 'Hell, Save My Soul', with both set to feature on their forthcoming album 'Shuffle/Play. A further new single release 'Think About It' came out on the 9th of April 2021.
