Pool Of Sound - Pleasure Island

The front man of 'Pleasure Island', Liverpool born Sean Ekins takes on an interesting background. His journey began as part of a garage rock three-piece called 'The Spitfires', based in Perth, Western Australia. The band started out doing tour supports for 'The Cribs' and 'British India' prior to putting out their first album 'Songs from the Debt Generation' but becoming disillusioned with the local music scene in Perth, the band left W.A. to relocate to Sydney. From there they toured Australia and Japan in support of the album. By now the band had gone through over thirteen drummers, including two which were recruited from the audience during the same show. After returning to Liverpool he began touring the UK, but was soon hospitalised. Two years of therapy followed after he suffered with psychosis, delusional disorders and PTSD. Forming part of the vibrant music scene situated around Smithdown Road in Liverpool, after a much-needed hiatus, the band relaunched under the new name 'Pleasure Island', they played their first show at the Smithdown Road festival with new drummer Sam Pierpoint. They began recording an EP at Liverpool's Motor Museum studio (where 'Oasis', 'The 1975' and the 'Arctic Monkeys' recorded their debut tracks), and a string of festivals and live dates were being lined up for 2019, with a bigger sound than ever.

They released their first single 'The Game' in October 2019, a sign of them producing music that is assured, unapologetic and electrifying. It appeared that the band were ready to claim their crown as the UK’s most thrilling independent guitar band.

The hotly tipped duo, with Sean Ekins on guitar and vocals with Sam Pierpoint on drums, have been compared to lo-fi post punks the 'Television Personalities', Manchester legends 'Buzzcocks', and the more recent band 'The Libertines' and early 'Arctic Monkeys'. Fusing quickfire riffs and nascent beats with sharp, witty, and occasionally poignant lyrics, they've become one of the most exciting live acts of late on the Liverpool scene. They headlined a show presented by the Pentatonic at The Jacaranda Club on the 12th of September 2020 with support from 'Kosmonauts' and 'Springbar'. Having wowed online viewers at the Liverpool Digital Music Festival in May 2020, they looked set to continue their gradual ascent into the nation's psyche with their latest single, 'Help Me NHS'. Following on from 'The Game', 'Help Me NHS' comes complete with a DIY video that was filmed in an old warehouse in Kirkby during lockdown.

The pair have brought their stripped down but forceful indie-post punk brand music with an uncompromising anthemic message to the masses via the Liverpool Digital Music Festival, and have even picked up support from ex Everton legend Neville Southall on Twitter! They are currently itching to get back into Liverpool's Motor Museum studio to complete an EP and look forward to playing shows again as soon as it’s physically and legally possible.
