Jaime April and Jason Moon, currently based in Southport, both come from the same hometown in Saskatchewan and started making music in their Canadian hometown of Prince Albert.
At one point Jason wanted to put together a big musical collective which evolved into a 10-piece, touring jam band. That shrank down to a four-piece comprised of their spouses with themselves. When the band and the marriages both imploded 'Fleetwood Mac'-style, they wanted a fresh start together. The two had been friends for years while playing in different bands but didn't hook up romantically until 2012.
They then moved to the UK in 2013 and started performing under their surnames – April + Moon with Jason on lead guitar and vocals and Jaime on rhythm guitar and backing vocals. While touring England with a band called the 'Magic Trees' they fell in love with the Northwest. Jason's mother, originally from Stockport, went to teachers college in Liverpool before emigrating to Canada. He visited as a child, again as a fresh-faced 18 year old and brought Jaime to visit. They just fell in love with the history and vibe of Liverpool and so when the opportunity arose to move, they jumped at it. That's the point where they decided that they wanted to develop their own project and move to the Northwest of England permanently, to build a life revolving around recording and playing live. Around this time they recruited Chorley-based drummer Alan Dye and Skelmersdale bassist, Mike Halewood.
Following their first album, 'The Sun, The Moon and the Truth', released in 2014, their second full-length album, 'The Bus That Takes The Sad People Away', was released in October 2016. Live shows with 'April Moon' are fun and upbeat either as a duo (two guitars, a kick drum, lots of vocal harmonies and even a melodica from time to time), or as a full band complete with their rockin' bass player Tino and a local drummer. Their sound weaves between the styles of country, psychedelic, Americana, and pop, not unlike 'The Grateful Dead' or 'Creedence Clearwater Revival' with lots of vocal harmonies, catchy melodies and boot stomping grooves. Besides their two full length albums as 'April Moon' they also released an EP under the name 'Wooden Rocket', (a project that involved some Liverpool based musicians). When most of their gigs in 2020 were cancelled due to Covid, the pair were inspired to work on a back burner project. The result was a 21-minute stick-puppet movie musical called, 'The Ballad Of Johnny West', which was recorded and filmed in their home studio over the year. Most recently, the pair have been writing and releasing singles.
Their Grand Plan for 2021 was to get back to gigging! Playing live is how they started out and they enjoy it so much. Jaime says, "The energy in a room that gets created between artists and audience when you're really in tune with each other just doesn’t happen in a livestream no matter how good your tunes are." In October 2021 they supported John Witherspoon at the Jacaranda and posted on their Facebook page, "We want to extend such a huge thank you and heartfelt appreciation to everyone who came out last night. We had such a great audience!... the Jacaranda was just such a cool, iconic venue for us to be playing music at. We just feel so grateful and filled after last night. Thank you thank you thank you!"
