Pool Of Sound - Hannah's Little Sister

'Hannah's Little Sister' is an erratic ramshackle quartet, loaded with an oddly addictive energy of extravagant surrealism. Having originally met whilst attending the LIPA school in Liverpool, the band have been together ever since, nurturing a DIY approach to their work and developing a striking sound that bites with its explosive energy and acutely honest lyricism. Originally the project in 2017 of singer, songwriter and guitarist, Meg, 'Hannah's Little Sister' has developed into a millennial mashup group, as Will, a friend from Meg's hometown of Burnley, and Ash and Lukas, friends from LIPA, complete the band. Meg originally never wanted to sing or be in a band as she used to be super scared of performing and was much more interested in the idea of writing for people. Then meeting the other three changed that and forced her out on stage, ultimately showing her that it is fun and silly. The band's full lineup is Meg Grooters on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards, Will Brown on drums, Nina Himmelreich on bass and vocals, ( formerly of tropical pop noise makers 'Pink Kink' ), and Ashley Snook on guitar and vocals. They've been making junk-pop for 3 years together now, but been friends for much longer!

'20'

A lot of the band’s success to date owes much to their first single '20', a ground shaking punk anthem that seemed to capture the anxieties and excitement that come with being thrown into adulthood and having newfound freedom. Released in September 2018 it was a thunderous introduction to punchy, Liverpool-based band 'Hannah's Little Sister' and their blistering brand of DIY alt-rock. Blossoming from a promising solo project into a quartet, they are becoming a lo-fi pop sensation in waiting. With a couple of scrappy singles out already out in the world, they gave a further taste of their more earnest side with the heart-wrenching stormer 'Anywhere'. Meg Grooters lets us into the inspiration for the track, saying, " I wrote this song just before I took a year out from uni, it was a weird time for me where I was discovering who I was, with my self-esteem at its lowest. I was lonely, I didn't feel like I was enough for my friends, and I felt like I had to be someone else, and act a certain way to be accepted by them. But it was also a time where I was in a really loving relationship, and in contrast to the situation with my peers I was just happy to be with that person, and live my life with them comfortably, wanting them around always. This was the good side of caring I hadn't really experienced before. I guess that sort of created two meanings, because adoring people can be a toxic thing or it can be a really fun and even fulfilling thing. But, if you're desperate to fit in or be liked and are wanting someone for the wrong reasons, it's easy to slip into moulding yourself to do so."

EP.mp3

The art-rock four-piece released their debut EP, the confusingly named 'EP.mp3' produced by Saam Jafarzadeh. It was released on the 20th of November with Manchester-based label Heist or Hit, and has earned the band acclaim in their home country and overseas from Stereogum, DIY Magazine, Brooklyn Vegan, Under The Radar, Clash, The Line of Best Fit, DORK Magazine and more, to build on historical support from The Guardian and BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders. It's a super strong debut from the Liverpool band who are currently in the studio with 'The Coral's' Bill Ryder-Jones which only lays the groundwork for the exciting things that are bound to come for this lot. Five tracks of clattering and calamitous indie-pop, its ramshackle delivery belies the band's inherent sharpness. Like a bottle of shook-up cherryade it explodes with the effervescent energy of opener 'Bin Mouth'. 'Chew' brings together twee-pop and Latin inflected riffage, before aptly named following track 'Gum' is where the 80s-children-show vibes veer seriously off-script, in the best way possible. This clears the decks for colossal closer 'Anywhere'. Instilling a false sense of security with its near saccharine opening, the track proceeds to blast your head-off as it descends into a rehearsal space freak-out.  The Liverpool-based band are an admirably peculiar ensemble, peddling their blistering brand of DIY and blossoming by bridging the gap between the weird, the wrong and the wonderful.
