Formed at the start of 2020, 'Mexican Dogs' is a Liverpool trio of Gaz Wilcox on guitar and vocals, Carl Rooney on drums and Sonny Winder-Rodgers on bass guitar, with big ambitions and an even bigger sound. Tapping into the seminal sounds of 'T-Rex' or 'Led Zep' and re-routing them via the high octane delivery of modern day titans like 'The Black Keys' or 'Royal Blood', they balance rock classic and contemporary on an exhilarating knife-edge. Gaz Wilcox who fronts the band has been playing guitar of a fine pedigree since the age of 9. Cutting his teeth at live shows only a year later (including a Beatles charity show at the Empire Theatre), he honed his talent at many of Liverpool's finest live haunts and beyond, performing in a string of bands including 'Eutopia', 'The Verdict' ,who won the UK Battle of the Bands, played a gig in The Houses of Parliament and also played in New York with 'The Enemy', and 'Reverend and the Makers'. Finally he played with 'Bribes', who earned a formidable live rep with major gigs at the Liverpool O2 in support of 'Electric Six' and at Sound City, the band earned multiple plays on BBC Introducing before going their separate ways due to creative differences. Rekindling his passion for music following a year away, he then formed 'Mexican Dogs' upon meeting Carl Rooney, who has toured with greats like 'Echo & The Bunnymen', Iggy Pop and 'The Hives', and also performed at Glastonbury, and young bassist Sonny Winder-Rodgers, whose dad is the guitar tech for Noel Gallagher. Feeling enlivened by their 'happy-go-lucky vibe', skill and enthusiasm, the trio found an instant connection. Creating music quickly and with ease, they began hatching plans for a bold, noisy future together. Only six months after their formation they were signed to Fretsore in the summer of 2021, who were suitably impressed with their earth-splitting live sound and uncompromising attitude. Label MD Ian Sephton said, "I’m delighted to sign one of the hottest new bands to emerge from Liverpool, their upbeat blend of rock/pop/glam is just what we all need right now!"
With a bewitching brew of glam-infused blues-rock that deftly transcends age
and experience, the band's immortal sound has
been hailed as 'Cream-Rex' by some early supporters. September 2021 saw them release their debut single,'You & I', which 'About The Noise' magazine said, "With an electrifying energy combining rock sounds of old and new, a new era of the genre is certainly upon us.
The song has a perfectly timed collision of instruments, making it unbelievable to listeners that this is their first single. The new track is a great taste of what’s to come for
'Mexican Dogs', who have plans to release a 4 track EP in November later
this year. This was released by Frestsore Records, as a band camp
exclusive on CD and vinyl and a Global digital release will follow!" In August 2021, they supported 'The Real Thing' at Jimmy's in Liverpool and then, 2 months later, were back with 'Tony Steele and the Massacre' at the same venue which sold out within 24 hours.
January 2022 saw the release of 'Run, Run, Run', which followed the rip-roaring success of their debut single, 'You & I' which had then surpassed 40k streams on digital services and continued to rise rapidly. They had put the track together in 3rd Planet Studios in Liverpool, with help from Andy Fernihough who produced and mastered the track. Within a month it had already had 10 thousand streams and they are already planning a full 4-track EP coming soon in 2022.
