Pool Of Sound - The Probes

The Probes Tour Dates

'The Probes' is a four-piece band from Liverpool with Jack Greene on vocals and guitar, Ray Badger on lead guitar, Justin Forman on bass guitar and Elliot Ferguson on drums. They released their first single, 'Hybrid', in July 2013 followed by 'Marrakech' and 'Sunshine State Of Mind'. Their first four-track EP 'Synesthesia' came out on Soundcloud in February 2014 with 'Echo And The Bunnymen's' Will Sergeant designing the EP cover. Their sound is directed by impressive Ian Curtis look-and-sound-alike vocalist Jack Greene, with some excellent fluid bass lines provided by excellently Justin Forman. The music blog Getintothis had this to say about them; "Channelling the spirit of post-punk icons, 'The Probes' are one of Liverpool’s youngest yet brightest new talents, Getintothis' Andy Von Pip provides an insight into a potentially dazzling future. Mixing a dark menacing new wave sensibility with mind-bending psychedelic flourishes 'The Probes' are without doubt one of the most exciting young bands to emerge from Liverpool in recent years."

Early days in 2013

Getintothis continue, "After initially bonding as school friends over artists such as 'The Fall', 'Love', 'Tame Impala', 'CAN', Neu!, and 'Kraftwerk', 'The Probes' became active in their current form in 2012 and were soon snapped up by Porcupine Records – the team behind the likes of 'Echo & The Bunnymen'. Their EP, ' Synesthesia', highlights the burgeoning talent these young lads possess and with outstanding tracks such as the hypnotic 'Marrakech' and 'Sunshine State Of Mind' and the explosive post punk of 'Plastic Lamb', they prove they can produce tunes of power, insight, and dark glittering beauty. However, perhaps the EP's closing track the Marrekech dub mix gives a greater insight into just what the band are capable of and what can be expected from The Probes‘ live experience. Their recent set at Sound City was nothing short of stunning and was undoubtedly one of our personal highlights of the entire festival. Indeed after said set, hotly tipped Mancunian duo Bernard + Edith felt compelled to tweet, 'If u wanna see Joy Division reborn go see The Probes – fukin amazin‘ and in front man Jack Greene with his commanding stentorian vocal it's hard not to make comparisons to the two Ians – Curtis and McCulloch. And when you catch them live it’s only then you appreciate their vast potential, which is so huge you could probably see it from space."

In 2016 Louder Than War pronounced them as 'New Band of the Day' and had this to say about them - "The Probes are a tripped out gem. Dealing a 21st century psychedelia, they make the past look like the future with a delicious musical melt that combines the motornik of Neu with some wonderful tripped out guitars and songs that are threaded to either as one endless piece that can last up to 30 minutes. There are so many great ideas built into their sound that it captivates you – from the reverb soaked guitar lines that evoke Syd Floyd and Will Sergeant Bunnymen – yup that good to the krautrock drums and the love of repetition it’s all very, very special. The songs drip lysergic melody but are dragged through the discipline and jagged edges of post punk that keeps them linear and not self indulgent." When they saw them supporting 'Echo And The Bunnymen' they were blown away with their inventiveness and darkly brilliant guitar trips.

At Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow in 2019 supporting Echo & The Bunnymen

After getting great reviews from supporting 'Echo & The Bunnymen' and 'Clinic', and sharing bills with 'Black Lips', 'The Wytches' and 'Crystal Stilts', they released their debut mini album, AUTONOMY as a free download in 2017 on their Soundcloud page. They released their next single, 'Minshy's Birthday' on Porcupine Records on the 23rd February 2018.
