A History Of Liverpool Thespians - Colin Tierney

Colin David Tierney was born in Liverpool in 1968. He made his acting debut in the television series 'Casualty' in 1991 and made an appearance in 'Soldier Soldier' (1992) and 'Between the Lines' (1992) before a notable performance in 'Cracker' (1994) in which he took one of the lead roles of DC Bobby Harriman working with Robbie Coltrane, Geraldine Somerville, Christopher Eccleston, Ricky Tomlinson, Lorcan Cranitch, Barbara Flynn, and Kieran O'Brien. The British crime drama series aired for three seasons, with 25 episodes on ITV.

When Litherland poet Roger McGough’s Capital of Culture year smash-hit adaptation of 'Tartuffe' returned to the Liverpool Playhouse in 2011, the eponymous hero was played by Colin who had been last at the Playhouse in 2007 in 'Our Country’s Good'. He had twice been directed by Bodinetz, at the Playhouse in 'The Lady of Leisure' alongside Greg Hicks, and at the Everyman in Jonathan Harvey’s 'Guiding Star'. Since then he has appeared as Horatio in Sheffield Crucible’s 'Hamlet' and as John Lennon's father in Sam Taylor-Wood’s 'Nowhere Boy' (2009).

Having had minor TV roles over the years, such as 'The Bill' (1993-2007), 'Serious and Organised' (2003), and 'Island at War' (2004), he is best known for his starring role as Chief Supt Gerry Rydell, a high-flying officer who rose through the ranks and found himself as Superintendent just two years after he joined the force, in the crime drama television series 'DCI Banks' (2010-11). Colin was a narrator in the TV series, 'Mafia's Greatest Hits' (2012-17) and appeared on 'Coronation Street' (2017) as drug dealer Ronan Truman and then in 2018 was in 'Eastenders' as Calvin, a Social Worker who meets Max Branning and Rainie Branning to discuss them taking custody of Baby Abi.

He has been married to actress Indira Varma since 1996 when they enjoyed a private lavish wedding ceremony attended by their family, friends, and close ones. They have one child Evelyn Tierney and  haven't worked together since they met doing Othello at the National Theatre in 1997. Actually there was one occasion when he was playing Hamlet at Bristol Old Vic and there was a chance that she'd get seen to play Ophelia, but he was quite wary and she thought, fair enough. The couple live in north London with their daughter, and Varma spends as much of her free time as possible at art exhibitions, walking her cocker spaniel Piper on Hampstead Heath and swimming in its ladies' pond, where no one pays her any attention because she says, "it’s far too cool for that."

Colin's theatre credits include 'All Our Children' (Jermyn Street Theatre); 'The Odyssey' and 'The Misanthrope' (Liverpool Everyman/English Touring Theatre); 'The Father' (Theatre Royal Bath/Tricycle); 'Britannia Waves the Rules' (Royal Exchange); 'The Last Days of Troy' (Royal Exchange/Shakespeare’s Globe); 'Betrayal', 'Hamlet' (Sheffield Crucible); 'Hedda Gabler' (Theatre Royal Bath/tour); 'One Minute' (Courtyard); 'Paul;, 'Othello', 'The Machine Wreckers' (National Theatre); 'How Love is Spelt' (Bush); 'Cold Meat Party', 'The Seagull' (Royal Exchange); 'Exiles' (Young Vic); 'The Duchess of Malfi', 'Henry VI' (RSC); 'Death of Cool' (Hampstead),the title role in 'Hamlet' (Bristol Old Vic) and 'Ivanov' (Almeida).
