Born in 1999, Koj is from Wavertree, an urban artist specialising in hip hop, rap and grime. He had been working tirelessly to make a success out of his music, but was growing frustrated about how many opportunities for jobs and networking were based outside of his home city. Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, he said: "I didn't go to university. When it was time for college, it was, sports college I went to, but I was always doing music alongside it and I think just chipping away at the music over time. I've always been active within the radio circuit but that's down London, not here, because there isn't really an infrastructure for that here." Speaking about the difference LIMF made to his career, Koj said: "You work on your craft intrinsically for so long and nobody really sees all the hard work you put in, so it's hard for that work to be valued externally."
Now he is a dynamic and well-respected musician who has carved out a unique place for himself in the Hip Hop and Trap music scenes. He has distinguished himself in the music industry with his distinctive style and alluring lyrics. Hip Hop, a genre that places a strong emphasis on self-expression and storytelling, is Koj's primary genre. His lyrics transport listeners on a journey through his own experiences and the truths of life. They are full of raw passion and thought-provoking topics. His flexibility as an artist is demonstrated by his ability to skillfully combine captivating melodies with hard-hitting sound and his love of music came from growing up in a music-heavy household. Koj's dad is a guitarist; he was in a band when he was Koj's age and his mum was always blasting some kind of Black music when he was a kid. When his mum passed away, he found 4 of her CDs that really shaped his music taste as a child. Those CDs were Outkast - Stankonia, Dr. Dre - The Chronic + 2001 and NWA’s Greatest Hits. Since showcasing his amazing lyrical dexterity on his debut track 'Blue Notes', KOJ has collected support from tastemakers in the space, alongside critical attention from core national radio, such as 1Xtra, Capital Xtra, KISS FM and Rinse FM. Performing his songs in the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, to a capacity audience, with the Youth Orchestra was pretty huge for him and he has cultivated his musical family by impressing industry and artists alike, collaborating heavily with producer Jakebob, hitting the festival circuit with slots at Boomtown and Kendal Calling, and releasing music with Manchester Hip-Hop collective, The Mouse Outfit. Along with his expertise in Hip Hop, he also delves into the Trap sub-genre, which is distinguished by its powerful bass lines and trap-inspired beats as he seamlessly fuses parts of Hip Hop and electronic music into his trap-infused compositions to produce a distinctive and alluring sound.
A true multifaceted talent, KOJ continues to rise in his music, all whilst launching OzMOB
- his creative community of visual and music artists. A singular
artist quickly developing a reputation as the future of UK rap, his all-around artistic ability indelibly marks him as a significant ‘one to
watch’ in the creative spheres. Koj's music is evidence
of his commitment to and love of his field. His songs are well received
by listeners, evoking a variety of feelings and having an enduring
impression. He pushes boundaries and changes the Hip Hop and Trap music
landscape with his distinct approach and unquestionable talent.
In July 2024 this rising rap sensation returned with a bang, unleashing his single, 'A REMINDER'. This track serves as the perfect precursor to his upcoming EP, 'VILLAIN WITH A CONSCIENCE', and it’s a reminder indeed of why he stands out in the crowded rap landscape. From the very first beat it grabs your attention and refuses to let go. His signature fusion of UK grime and classic hip-hop vibes immediately sets the tone, creating an electric atmosphere that crackles with energy. Assisted by an old-school backbeat, he effortlessly showcases his lyrical prowess and unmistakable scouse flow. Produced by TEE and mixed by Mike Cave, it boasts a sound that is both raw and polished and is a testament to KOJ’s creative vision and authenticity that shines through in every bar.
