All four members, childhood friends, share a passion for the music that is encapsulated in the city’s culture.
Early pic from 2023 |
Drummer, Elliot Burge, listened to a lot of 'Floyd' and 'The Beatles' with his grandad and a lot of 'Zeppelin', 'The Who', 'The Doors' etc. with his other grandad and so had an early upbringing with rock music. Since then he's basically played music all his life, starting on the guitar, then his uncle, who was in bands when he was younger, introduced him to the drums, so then he just moved on to drums, bass and so on.
Frank 'Madri' jokes, "Heard I’d be able to pick up hella chicks if I was in a band… no luck yet but I have high hopes."
Will Mc didn't decide until quite late that music was something he was going to move towards, but was always singing as a little kid and when he reached 17 or 18 started singing in bars with Sonny as a duo and that blossomed into him learning the guitar and bass. Then the start of 'East Exchange' took over
Sonny K loved
singing and listening to music as a youngster and when he was in school his mum wanted him to
play an instrument, so as he got older, he just fell more and more in love
with it.
The band's sound draws on a range of influences, from classic rock to funk and indie and the huge diversity is evident in their sound, which is measured and mature, clearly something that has been worked on and diligently crafted. Taking inspiration from bands such as 'Pink Floyd', 'Cream', ' Dire Straits', 'Led Zeppelin', 'The Red Hot Chilli Peppers', 'Kasabian', 'Oasis', 'The Beatles' and 'The Night Cafe' all the way to Ed Sheeran, Paulo Nutini, 'The Kooks' and many more.
Arts Club Loft in March 2024 |
At the Arts Club Loft, alongside Alex Spencer and 'Keyside', you could probably class their sound as Alt Rock, being built round layered, ubiquitous guitar riffs, played over thunderous percussion provided by a drummer with a John Bonham fixation. He didn't beat the drums, he gave them a damn good thrashing. And when he was done, he thrashed them again.
The current music 'East Exchange' is releasing puts across the excitement and passion felt by the band as they were formed, and tells stories of the young adult lifestyle. In their short but successful life so far as band 'East Exchange' have managed to do gigs playing in big Liverpool venues, such as Hanger 34 and the O2 academy supporting bands such as 'Cast', 'Sundara Karma' and 'The Sway'. With some local radio plays on various stations the band has big aspirations and has big plans to help achieve these.
