Rachael Lindsay was born on the 18th of February 1972 in Liverpool. She had a charmed childhood and went to drama school, before joining 'Brookside' (1987 - 2003) and
went straight to having lots of money and going to great parties. Lindsay had only previously appeared in school productions but secured the role after she learned that 'Brookside'
was auditioning for a new family. Knowing someone already working
on the show, they introduced her to his agent who helped her secure the
role. Her character Samantha 'Sammy' Rogers was originally characterised as a rebellious and headstrong teenager and animal rights enthusiast. A long-running relationship story with Owen Daniels (Danny McCall) began with a romance while at school and writers developed them into a married couple with a child, but writers transformed her into an alcoholic as she dealt with a life 'tinged with tragedy'. The on-screen romance turned into a real life one as the couple began a relationship off screen which lasted seven years.
After leaving Brookside the first time, in 1993, Rachael headed to London with high hopes, professionally and personally. She had a major TV profile and was half of one of soap's most glamorous couples, but she revealed later that she hated living so far away from her family and friends. "That was the last couple of years of my relationship with Danny and, to be honest, they were horrific," she says. When she and Danny split after seven years together, she admits it was hard, although she now believes it would have been easier if their romance had been less public property. "At the time it was horrendous, but you look back and realise that these things happen to you for a reason - they make you stronger and tougher. Danny was a very over-powering type of character. I was a strong woman, I always have been, but he was very much into being a showbusiness personality. There were things which, looking back, I wouldn't have done. I'm not showbizzy at all, I'm quite a private person. I had some great times with him but I had some difficult times as well and, when the whole thing ended up very disastrously, it took me a long time to get over. I'd been in that relationship for seven years and I felt it had suffocated me at times so, once it was over, I just wanted to get back on my feet again, to grow again." That first step was moving back to live in Formby near her parents, and to teach at her sister's drama school in Crosby. She also became a believer in faith and in fate, realising that when everything was going wrong it was for a reason.
In 2001, Lindsay was contacted by the producers at Mersey TV asking her to return to the show. Having already moved back to Liverpool it made accepting the invitation convenient. Lindsay had also missed playing Sammy and had not worked in television for some time.
One appearance in Casualty (2007) and in the short drama 'Learning to Walk' (2007), alongside fellow Brookside regulars Simon O'Brien and Ricky Tomlinson, was her only TV work after 'Brookside'.
